The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan
The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, Michael Pollan, The Penguin Press, New York, 2006
Here Pollan takes the reader through the various paths by which our food reaches our tables. He examines the positive and negative aspects of industrial and organic agriculture, as well as hunting and gathering one’s own food. This book will make you acutely aware of the flaws in the United States’ industrial food chain, and describe why adopting an ecosystem-based form of agriculture makes sense from environmental, animal welfare, and human health standpoints. It will also lead you to question the words “organic” and “free-range” and help you find new ways of determining whether a food item is good for you and the environment! This book made us switch to eating only free-range animal products, however, as you will see, free-range doesn’t always mean rolling green pastures. But, it’s a step in the right direction…
