In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan
In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, Michael Pollan, The Penguin Press, New York, 2008
In this book, Michael Pollan outlines the pitfalls of nutritionism and why going back to the basics of eating “real” food is better for health. Pollan describes the history of nutritionism and how a reductionist approach to food has likely caused many of the health problems facing the United States today. Throughout the narrative, Pollan outlines some guidelines for buying and eating food that he has developed through his extensive research of the modern food industry. This book is both enlightening and inspiring, and it will definitely change the way you eat! Pollan’s style is witty and easy to read. His facts are well-researched and he does an excellent job of explaining food science and nutrition to those that aren’t familiar with scientific research. See the bestdailyrecipe.com posts, Pollan’s Rules, for a summary of the book’s message.
